  • what is explicitly stated, claimed or concluded
  • what is assumed or supposed, perhaps without justification or proof

Argument task Practice Question No. 1 of 1

The following announcement appeared in an East-West Bus Line company memorandum:
“Beginning on June 1, the East-West Bus Company will no longer run buses on any of its interstate routes on Saturdays and Sundays. A survey of the riders on the Boston-New York route taken over a ten-day period in November showed that more than 95% of the passengers do not use the buses on weekends. This reduction in the schedule will allow the company to continue to increase its return to stockholders with a minimum of inconvenience to the bus-riding public.”
Write an essay in which you discuss how convincing you find this argument. Your essay should consider the argument’s line of reasoning and how well it uses evidence. You may wish to discuss any doubtful assumptions and how other possible explanations could affect its conclusions. Your essay may also consider how the argument could be made more persuasive and its conclusion more convincing.
